I Made a Website Yesterday

Computer and coffee mug

I had something I thought would be fun to share with people a few days ago, but I had no suitable venue to post the text into. Tumblr had been recommended to me, so I took the time to dust off my as-yet-unused Tumblr account, format the text, and stick up a post. It was only after sharing the post on Facebook and Google+ that I learned that Tumblr doesn’t have a comment function. In fact, after poking around a bit more, I’m not sure what exactly Tumblr is supposed to be used for…maybe announcements or something.

I then was consumed by the idea of starting a website on my own. I bought a dozen domain names a few years ago; they were sitting around, not doing anything, because I didn’t know how to go about making a website. Now seemed to be a good time to learn.

I got so excited by this idea that I almost jumped out of bed two nights ago to try my hand at registering a host domain website thing and making WordPress run on it. Yeah, I didn’t know what I was doing at all. After spending half a day on this, I now have marginally more knowledge than I did two nights ago. Yesterday, for the first time, I set up a webhost! I flimgaggled the nameservers so they point where they should! I installed WordPress! I (barely) customized my theme! All of these were firsts for me, and I did them by myself. Admittedly, that’s why this site sucks.

But it’s here, and I’m going to write things and figure out how this stuff works. I’m excited to learn, and I’m looking forward to writing more in general.

Also, the Internet needs more blogs.

  1. Thanks! Yeah, I know, we’re swimming in blogs. Tongue in cheek. Since it seems like everyone and their cat has a blog and/or website, I wonder sometimes what’s taken me so long.

And it’s not here for the hits. Sure, getting readers would stoke my ego, but I just need the practice. I need to develop a writing habit. Maybe, as you suggest, it’ll turn out to be fun! And hopefully I’ll become a better and faster writer. We’ll see.

  2. Congrats! It looks great to me! It’s definitely a lot of fun, or maybe that’s just me.

P.S. “the Internet needs more blogs” This makes me think of a sentence like “the ocean needs more water” or “that mountain needs more rocks.” No offence intended.
